Grandpa

Aparently grandpa is really not doing well. That seems to be an understatement from what I understand from my mother.

He had 6 TIA's on Thursday and a massive stroke on Friday which lodged a clot in the Pons. For those of you not in the know the Pons is part of the brainstem and controls a lot of the body's autonomic functions and acts as a relay for sensory information. He can't speak, or swallow, or really move at all...There is very little function left.

The outlook...not good. If he ever regains function he's going to be in an assisted living facility for the rest of his life. The problem for me is...a few years ago he took me aside and begged, begged me not to ever let him end his days like that.

You probably already know this, but does he have a living will? If not, there's probably nothing that can be done to ease him on out unless all the children agree.

Not reassuring or comforting, I know. One can only hope for the brain to realize what's up and, well.....

Sorry I didn't answer sooner. I got angry at your grandpa for doing that to you (especially with you so young), and I thought I'd better cool off before replying. It is neither your fault, nor your responsibility what happened, nor are you in a position of authority to do anything about it. I'm assuming that one of your parents has the authority to make decisions in this case (yes?).
I wish I could be more comforting. I'm glad some of the others on this page stepped into that role. You deserve comfort right now.

*hug* It's hard, I know but take comfort in the fact that hopefully it will be over soon. Check the will to see if there is a DNR. Maybe that could give you some lee way for anything in the future to make this end sooner.
