How does one keep one's skills up to par, when there are no fighter practices, no events and noone to fight with.

I don't want to be a complete loss when I come to the US again to fight. I fear that I am going to be and that I will NEVER be any good. I know I showed some promise once upon a time.

Drills drills drills, my friend. Point control drills, and really break down your mechanics. Focus on footwork, and focus on your half lunge. There are lots and lots and lots of single drills that can help you not only maintain, but benefit from this time!

Elaborate please, what sort of drills. We never really drilled much and I'd rather not make them up. Which ones help you?

First things first.... Question everything you have been taught. Now is an awesome time to overhaul your fundamentals...

Buy this book...

http://revival.us/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=18

in it you will see the basic fundamental physiological principles for rapier combat. It also contains some tremendous solo drills to engrain them.

Buy the book, and USE it.

SLOW WORK!! it's the key, but first question every mechanic you have been taught, and verify it against human combative principles.

When your done with the drills in the book, I have lots lots more.

Another good book is The Duellist's Companion by Guy Windsor. He breaks down the basics of Capo Ferro. Even if you don't want to do Capo Ferro alot of what is done in the book can help you out.

Also record your movements and then watch them to see what you're doing. You can also work in front of a mirror.

Rob is an expert on drills and solo practice. Heed well his advice and it will do you well.

For what it is worth, I know exactly what you are talking about in fear of losing skills with no one to practice against or to drive you.
